Report: Wearables get boost in Q3 due to 'hearables'

A recent report from the market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) shows the impact of Apple on the wearable segment. Or we should say, the effect of the Apple AirPods on the industry. The wearable segment has seen a significant rise in the third quarter of 2019 because of the "hearables" market, which is another name for wireless earbuds, headphones, etc.

A total of 40.7 million units of hearables were shipped over 2018's 11.8 million. This figure means that for the segment alone, there was a year-on-year growth of 242.4%.

And the boost is mostly due to the Apple AirPods. The company led in the wearables category because of it. They shipped 29.5 million units in Q3 of 2019. If you compare that with the 10 million units it shipped in the third quarter of 2018, you get a 195.5% growth over the last year. Thus, also giving Apple a total market share of 35% for this year's third quarter.

Apple is followed up by Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei, and Fitbit on the list of the top 5 wearables. But none of these companies have caught up with Apple yet.

And with smartphones losing the 3.5mm audio jack, you can expect that more wireless audio accessories will be available to you in the future.
