IoT Devices that could change our lives in the near future

By the year 2020, it is expected that there will be over 20 billion devices connected to the internet.  This is astonishing when you look at how far we’ve come, and it’s only going to get bigger once 5G rolls out around the world.  IoT refers to the ‘Internet of Things’ and within the next couple of years, the average American is expected to own 13 of these devices.  But what can we expect to see in the future?  Let’s take a look.

Smart Refrigerators

One of the first IoT devices we saw, way back in 2000, was LG’s smart refrigerator.  This connected via a LAN network and allowed the user to stream music, schedule tasks, video conference, and check the weather.  Today’s smart refrigerators have come a long way.  Most contain tablets on the front which enable users to write their grocery list by finger and order it via an app, while others contain cameras which let shoppers view the inside of their fridge while at the store.  In the future, we can expect these refrigerators to become even smarter.  With AI embedded in them, they will be able to order your shopping for you as and when you need it.  They’ll also be able to notify you about use-by-dates, ensuring no food goes to waste.

Smart Toothbrushes

There’s already a wide range of health connected devices on the market, but the future could see things being taken even further.  Smart toothbrushes will enable users to view the inside of their mouths using a connected mobile app.  They’ll be able to see which parts of their mouth require extra brushing, while also receiving up-to-date statistics regarding their brushing habits.  In the future, we can expect toothbrushes to send this data to your dentist, enabling your dentist to book an appointment with you when they notice your dental hygiene lacking.  It may sound scary, but it could save a lot of pain.

Delivery Drones

Delivery drones have been in the news a lot lately, with Amazon trialing the devices.  Now, thanks to better smart grid technology, this is something that looks like it could become a reality in the very near future.  Using the same data our phones use for location services, delivery drones will know exactly where to drop your packages and then notify the buyer by smartphone once the package has been delivered.  This will be an essential tool, especially during the peak holiday shopping seasons.
