Huawei's Hongmeng OS might launch soon
Huawei's alternative operating system, Hongmeng, might be launching soon. At least this is what China's state-run Global Times, so you might need to take the information with a grain of salt. It's said the OS will be unveiled at Huawei's upcoming developer conference. This event kicks off on Friday, August 9th in Dongguan, China.
Huawei first claimed it was going to be the company's alternative to Android. But it's now being marketed as software that will primarily be used for IoT devices. It's said that it'll first come to Honor smart TVs. The report also compares Hongmeng to Google's Fuchsia OS, which is an experimental OS designed to run on various form factors. Hongmeng is said to be built around a microkernel to allow it to "better accommodate artificial intelligence and can run on multiple platforms."
But Hongmeng being used as an OS for a phone isn't out of the picture either. Global Times says that a Hongmeng OS-based smartphone is in the works and it's being tested. It's said to be a phone for the low- to mid-range segment with pricing set at around 2,000 yuan (around CA$380).
