Huawei Mate 40 Pro offers 50W wireless charging, new flagship Kirin 9000 chipset

Huawei follows up the P40 series with the new Mate 40 line, which debut new features like 50-watt wireless charging and the new flagship 5nm Kirin 9000 processor. The Mate 40 Pro and Pro Plus come with a curved 6.76-inch 90Hz OLED screen with a 2,772 x 1,344 resolution and an in-display fingerprint sensor. To protect the phones, these come with IP68 dust- and water-resistance.

As with Huawei's flagship phones of the past, the camera is a big focus. The Mate 40 series looks to lead the charge in terms of camera tech and specs in a new circular design reminiscent of the Apple iPods' click wheel. 

The Mate 40 Pro Plus comes built with a 50-megapixel primary lens, a 20-megapixel ultrawide sensor, an 8-megapixel periscope lens with 10x zoom, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x zoom. This phone offers up to 17x optical zoom with this configuration.

The Mate 40 Pro gets the same 50-megapixel main sensor and 20-megapixel ultrawide, but its periscope lens only has 5x zoom, allowing for a maximum optical zoom of 7x.

The new flagships run on what Huawei claims is the world's first 5nm 5G processor. It pairs an eight-core CPU with a 24-core GPU. The Pro Plus comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Pro comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The battery capacity for both phones is at 4,400mAh. Aside from the 50W wireless charging, these phones also support 66-wat wired charging and reverse wireless charging.

Without access to Google's apps and services, Huawei equips the Mate 40 series with its ecosystem, including the new Petal Search and Maps.

There's also a new standard Mate 40 released alongside these more powerful handsets. It comes with a smaller 6.5-inch display with a lower 1080p resolution and a slower Kirin 9000E chipset. The Mate 40 loses the periscope lens. It comes built with a 50-megapixel main, a 16-megapixel ultrawide, and an 8-megapixel telephoto with a 3x optical zoom. 

The Mate 40 also has a smaller battery at 4,200mAh with no wireless charging support and a maximum of 40W wired fast charging. It comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro Plus retails for €1,399 (around CA$2,173), while the Mate 40 Pro goes for €1,199 (CA$1,863). The former comes in black and white, while the latter is available in black, white, silver, yellow, and green. The Mate 40 is priced at €899 (CA$1,399), and it'll be available in the same colours as the Mate 40 Pro. The Mate 40 Pro will come to the UK starting November 13, while the two other phones don't have a release date yet.
