Square Enix will be letting most of its employees work from home permanently starting December 1. The game developer and publisher will assign each worker as either office- or home-based. Both cases require the individuals to work an average of at least three days from their respective locations.

And if their position allows for it, they can change their assignment monthly. Square Enix expects around 80 percent of its employees will prefer to work from home. Some positions will still require them to work out of one of the company's offices.

Square Enix wanted to implement this program to improve its employees' productivity, giving them a chance to improve their work-life balance. It also hopes to attract more diverse talent and allow the company to be more resilient when unexpected events and disasters like COVID-19 happen again.

It isn't uncommon for tech companies to allow their workers to work from home permanently. But in the gaming space, Square Enix is one of the few leading the charge.
