There are lots of debates over the efficiency of the Martingale System. ’Can I make money at the casino using the Martingale System?’ If you ask a new player who studied books and other resources about casino strategies, they will reply in the affirmative. On paper, the martingale system sounds superefficient.

Ask a pro gambler the same question and the answer will not be that favorable. Some will even go the extra mile to name better strategies that offer you a better chance of making money. Yes, the Martingale system works but it is no longer the smashing success it was in the 18th century.

What is the Martingale System?

The Martingale System originated from France. It is a simple system that works on games where the odds of winnings are 50-50 such as heads or tails. Games like blackjack and roulette are where the Martingale System works best.

To understand if you can make money at casinos using the Martingale System, we have to look at its application in the two casino games (Blackjack and Roulette) where it works best.

The Martingale System in Blackjack

The Martingale System is a strategy that involves doubling your stakes on all losing bets. The goal of this strategy is to hit huge winnings when eventually the game turns in your favor. For example. If you place a $10 bet on a blackjack game and lose, you have to stake double the losing bet $20 on the next game.

The strategy is a tenacious one and requires you to keep doubling your bets until you win a hand, in the hope that you will eventually win a hand.

With this strategy, once you eventually win a hand, you get a profit. For example, if you stake $5 and lose, then you double it and stake $10 and lose, and then you double it and stake $20. If you win the fourth hand, you will get $40 as winnings. Calculate the amount you put on the first three hands and it amounts to $35. At the end of the day, you make a profit of $5.

The Martingale System in Roulette

Here the principle is utilized the same way it is for the Blackjack games. For every roulette spin, you lose, you have to double your stakes on the next turn of the wheel. For example, if you start $20 and lose, you have to stake $40 at the next turn of the wheel. You keep on doubling your stake on losing stakes until you win.

If you place a bet of $5 and lose, on the following turn of the wheel you double it to $10. If you win at the second turn, you get $20. You get a profit of $5 after making bets worth $15.

To properly implement this system, you have to play only prepositions that are on a 50-50 basis such as betting only on traditional red or black games as opposed to more dynamic roulette games.

Does the Martingale System Works?

The system sounds like a winning formula for new players. Often, resources that advertise for the Martingale System paints it as a roaring success which is far from the far. Any experienced player who has used the Martingale System will tell you not to put your hopes on it, and even point you to better strategies.

Why? Why does the system sound so mathematically accurate and yet experts avoid it? There are several answers to this question.  The first problem with this system is that you need to have a huge bankroll to successfully implement it. The flaw in the system assumes that your bankroll is infinite when the average gambler uses only a small bankroll to play.

For example, a player has only $100 as a bankroll. If he loses the first bet of $10, and doubles up the second time, and uses $20. The third time he doubles to $40.  The player cannot repeat the double up the fourth time because he or she only has $30 left. In this case, the Martingale System fails.

If I have an unlimited bankroll, the system works for me, right? This brings us to the second obstacle. Most casinos have maximum betting limits that make the system counterproductive.

Conclusion

The Martingale System will work perfectly for you if you have an unlimited bankroll and there are no maximum betting limits. However, in reality, these two obstacles sexist. In some cases, the system can work for you even in the face of these obstacles but it is at best a gamble.
