Huawei launches Google-less P40 series

Huawei's newest P40 flagship series is another attempt to lure you with solid hardware, so you can forget that it doesn't have Google services in it. As you can expect, Huawei improved its camera capabilities as well as brought a new display for the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+. Let's take a look at what the new phones offer:

SOFTWARE

We're getting this out of the way immediately. The Huawei P40 series runs on Android 10, but it doesn't come with Google apps and services installed. In its place, Huawei is working to bring more of its services to replace what users would otherwise miss from Google. 

There is a new MeeTime voice and video calling app that offers screen-sharing. Huawei also has a new voice assistant called Celia. It supports English, French, and Spanish. Celia can take on basic tasks like adding reminders, making calls, as well as AI-powered features like using AI lens. Huawei has partnered with brands like TCL to bring a Google Cast-like protocol, as well as introducing a simple wireless content sharing tech between devices.

DISPLAY

The Huawei P40 Pro+ and P40 Pro have what's called an "Overflow Display," featuring four curved edges, with all sides sweeping down to the frame of the phone. There is a "smaller" pill-shaped hole-punch that houses the 32-megapixel front camera with autofocus, IR depth/gesture camera, and ambient and proximity sensor. The IR scanner can be used as an alternative way to secure payments.

 

The P40 Pro+ and P40 Pro have a 6.58-inch OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and 2,640 x 1,200 resolution. Its screen comes with a fingerprint reader that's said to recognize fingerprints faster, and its coverage area is 30% larger.

Meanwhile, the P40 has a flat 6.1-inch OLED screen with a 1080p+ resolution and standard 60Hz refresh rate.

CAMERA

Huawei, together with its partner Leica, brings tons of new features into these phones' cameras. The Huawei P40 Pro+ comes with four camera sensors and Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors. Its periscope lens has a focal length of 240mm, and it's backed by an 8-megapixel image sensor and offers Optical Image Stabilization. Huawei achieves the longest lens on a mobile phone yet with this handset.

That isn't its only zoom lens, though. There's an 80mm telephoto lens, too, which bridges the gap between the extreme telephoto and regular camera to give you more chances to take high-quality photos at different distances. Its primary sensor has a large 1/1.28-inch sensor with a 50-megapixel resolution, RYYB colour filter, and 100% phase-detection coverage. There is also a 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle along with a colour temperature sensor.

The P40 Pro has a quad-camera setup and the same primary lens setup as the P40 Pro+. It retains the periscope design of the P30 with a focal length of 125mm, 12-megapixel RYYB sensor, and OIS. Its ultra-wide-angle Cine Lens also has a 40-megapixel sensor with an 18mm f/1.8 lens. The P40 Pro also comes with a ToF and colour temperature sensors.

The standard P40 comes with a triple camera setup with the same "Ultra Vision" 50-megapixel main sensor along with an 8-megapixel, 80mm telephoto lens with OIS, ultra-wide camera with a 16-megapixel sensor and 17mm lens. Its selfie camera is also 32 megapixels, but it doesn't have autofocus. It still retains 4K video recording at 60 frames per second, though.

HARDWARE

All three phones are powered by a Kirin 990 5G processor with 8GB of RAM, but the Pro models get a four-layer SuperCool system. The P40 Pro+ is only available with 512GB of storage, while the P40 Pro has 256GB of storage, and the P40 has 128GB of storage.

The P40 Pro+ introduces 40-watt wireless charging, which Huawei boasts is the fastest commercialized wireless charging speed available now. It's the same charging speed wired. And yes, the 4,200mAh battery can be used for reversed wireless charging.

The P40 Pro has the same battery capacity and wired charging speed as the P40 Pro+. But it has the same 27-watt wireless charging rate as the Mate 30 Pro.

 

The P40 comes with a smaller 3,800mAh battery without any wireless charging support. Its wired charging speed is only at 22.5 watts.

The P40 Pro+ is made with durable ceramic, which Huawei claims is as tough as sapphire. It comes in Black and White and supports IP68 water- and dust-resistance.

The P40 Pro also has the same IP68 rating, but it'll be available in two additional colours. This handset comes in Black, White, Silver, and Gold.

The P40 only has an IP53 rating for basic protection against dust and water splashes. It comes in an additional Blue colour.

PRICE

The Huawei P40+ Pro will cost €1,399 and will be available in June. The P40 Pro will be coming on April 7 with a price of €999 for the 8GB RAM with a 256GB storage model. And the P40 will also arrive on April 7 with a €799 price tag for the 8GB + 128GB configuration.
