Huawei denies reports it'll sell its P and Mate series phone brands
There is a rumour going around that Huawei is in early talks to sell its P and Mate series brands as it moves to exit the premium smartphone manufacturing business. Reuters reported that two unnamed sources with direct knowledge of the matter claim the Chinese company is in talks with a consortium of government-backed Shanghai investment firms. The report claims talks began in September, shortly before Huawei sold off its phone brand Honor.
But a spokesperson from Huawei denied the report saying in a statement: "Huawei has learned there are unsubstantiated rumours circulating regarding the possible sale of our flagship smartphone brands. There is no merit to these rumours whatsoever. Huawei has no such plan. We remain fully committed to our smartphone business, and will continue to deliver world-leading products and experiences for consumers around the world."
These two smartphone series are the company's premium models, which are popular globally. But with US sanctions still in effect, it made it harder for Huawei to sell the device to users as they no longer ship with Google services. And Huawei was forced to stop making its Kirin chipsets because it could no longer buy US-made components.
Donald Trump's administration ordered many of the sanctions imposed on the company. But it isn't clear if President Joe Biden will reverse this decision. Huawei is accused of being a security threat because of ties to the Chinese government, which the company continues to deny.
