Mercedes-Benz shows off its massive Hyperscreen display for EQS luxury EV

Touch-based infotainment displays are quite common these days, but we're confident that there aren't many of them that feature as gigantic a display as the new Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen. This massive 56-inch display is built specifically for the EQS luxury electric vehicle. It features the automaker's second-generation MBUX infotainment system, which no longer has physical buttons as the system relies on touch- and voice-controlled interface.

Technically, Hyperscreen isn't one giant screen, but several OLED panels embedded into a piece of curved glass that spans most of the EQS' dash. It is covered by anti-reflective Gorilla Glass with auto-brightness adjustment courtesy of a camera and light sensor, making sure you don't get distracted by it when you drive at night. It has a total of 12 actuators beneath its touch-sensitive surface for haptic feedback and analogue air vents embedded in the surface at either end.

It displays the instrument cluster, infotainment system, and passenger display. And with its reliance on artificial intelligence, it will surface only the essential elements. If you're on a solo drive, for example, it gets rid of the passenger view.

It runs on an unspecified eight-core processor and 24GB of RAM, so power isn't an issue. Mercedes is pushing for artificial intelligence here, so the system should surface and suggest features that you need. For example, it'll offer to call a contact you regularly talk to on your drive home or remember your preferred massage type depending on outside temperatures.

Mercedes is working to achieve a "zero layer" interface so that everyday tasks are easily accessible and will reduce the risk of distracting the driver. Navigation, for example, will take up the center of the screen.

"The goal was a concept without distraction of the driver or creating complicated operation," Sajjad Khan, member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG and CTO on the new MBUX generation, said in a press release. "We didn't want to build the biggest screen ever in a car. Instead, we have developed special screens with a perfect ratio of size and functionality for maximum user-friendliness."

Mercedes won't say when the EQS will be available beyond saying a late 2021 release.
