Twitter tests out an 'unmention' feature to 'control unwanted attention'

Twitter is trying out new ways to prevent "unwanted attention" on its platform that can lead to harassment. And these new tests won't require you to block or mute anyone. Instead, the company is trying out an "unmention yourself" feature and control over who can tag you in future tweets. Twitter product designer Dominic Camozzi described the features as "early concepts."

"Unmention" is similar to untagging yourself on Facebook. It unlinks your Twitter handle from a tweet to prevent being tagged in future replies. The feature could let you block specific users from mentioning you in the future without blocking their accounts outright. Another possible iteration is you can block any mentions for a set number of days.

As for the other feature, it's similar to the function that lets you limit replies to tweets. But "unmentioning" can help curb some of the toxic behaviours on the platform. You can use this tool after the fact or proactively. Camozzi didn't mention when or if Twitter will roll these features out, but the company is looking for feedback on the ideas.
