Wear OS watches running on Snapdragon Wear 3100 won't get upgraded to next-gen OS

Mobvoi TicWatch E3 will be eligible for Wear OS 3 update

With the announcement of Google and Samsung's new Wear OS platform, which is officially called Wear OS 3, we already know that it isn't the best time to purchase existing smartwatches on Google's platform. But now, we get a clearer picture of which smartwatches you should avoid getting. Those using older Android smartwatches running on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset won't be getting the next-generation operating system.

Those that are eligible for upgrades to Wear OS 3 include Mobvoi's GPS and LTE TicWatch Pro 3, the TicWatch E3, future TicWatch devices, as well as the next generation of Fossil smartwatches. All of these are or will be powered by Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor. These eligible watches will need to be reset to factory settings, but Google assured it will provide more details before the update is released. The system update is expected to come out around mid to second half of 2022.

Google emphasized that it won't drop the existing version of Wear OS because it anticipates that many smartwatch owners won't be eligible to upgrade or want to upgrade immediately. And that it plans to bring more "new app experiences" to Wear OS. The company intends to provide security updates for a minimum of two years from the device's launch.
