Google now offers battery-powered Nest Cam and Doorbell

Google updates its Nest lineup with three new products and a new wired indoor Nest Cam. For the first time, Google introduces battery-powered Nest Cam and Doorbell, which you can still keep plugged into a wired power source. Battery life for either device is dependent on how many recorded events they capture and factors such as temperature and settings. The Nest Doorbell can last up to six months on a single charge, while the Nest Cam can go up to seven months before needing a recharge. The Nest Doorbell recharges over USB-C, while the Nest Cam uses a USB-A adaptor.

As for their video capture capabilities, the Nest Doorbell can capture videos at a 1280 x 989 resolution at up to 30 frames per second. It also comes with 6x digital zoom, a 145-degree diagonal field of view and a 3:4 field of view, and can see up to 10 feet away in the dark. The Nest Doorbell can also detect and recognize packages placed as close as eight inches to the door.

The Nest Cam can record video in 1080p at up to 30fps. And it comes equipped with a 130-degree diagonal field of view, a night vision of up to 20 feet away, 6x digital zoom, and an IP54 rating for weather resistance. You can mount this camera outdoors and indoors.

The Nest Doorbell and Nest Cam are designed using recycled materials. Both of them offer up to three hours of event video history. If you want to boost that, you'll need a Nest Aware subscription.

Similar to other Nest cameras, the Nest Cam gets round-the-clock video recording with a Nest Aware Plus subscription. Of course, that means you have to hook it up to a wired power source.

Aside from the new battery-powered Nest devices, Google offers a Nest Cam with an integrated floodlight.

All four new Nest products are designed to alert you only when important events occur. They all have on-device machine learning capabilities to identify and alert you to people, animals, and vehicles. You won't need a subscription to access these features, including the Doorbell's package detection. The Nest camera data is encrypted, so you don't have to worry about that.

Subscribers do get the additional familiar-face detection feature for these products.

The on-device capabilities also mean these products can store up to an hour of video events locally if power or Wi-Fi goes out. That can be up to a week's worth of events, depending on the activity levels around your home. These products will then upload these events to the cloud once you're online again. All devices work with Google products like the Google Home app.

The battery-powered Nest Cam and Doorbell retail for CAD 239.99 each and are available for pre-order in Canada, the US, UK, New Zealand, and Australia. They will be available on August 24. The Nest Cam with floodlight retails for USD 280 (around CAD 350), and the second-generation wired Nest Cam goes for USD 100 (around CAD 125). The latter two will come at a later date.
