Hollywood Suite's Cinema A to Z Books launches this month
Film fans can turn a new page this August with Cinema A to Z: Books. The Hollywood Suite original program is the first in a series of hour-long episodes that explore common themes through a selection of expertly curated movies. Cinema A to Z: Books will premiere exclusively on Hollywood Suite on August 21 at 9pm ET. Viewers can also catch the show on Hollywood Suite On Demand starting August 1, 2022.
The act of translating literary works to film dates back to the inception of the moving image; from fairy tales, to Shakespeare, to dime store novels and H.G. Wells, the printed page offered filmmakers their first source of narrative inspiration. A century later, Hollywood studios and indie producers still look to bestselling books for awards season darlings and box office hits.
“Understanding how the industry looks to literature and popular fiction to help shape the medium of film provides a better understanding of the stories, both written and filmed, that define us,” says Hollywood Suite personality and co-host of the A Year in Film podcast, Cam Maitland. “Cinema A to Z: Books highlights a diverse selection of authors and works, ranging from classics adapted dozens of times over the past century, to radical works of immeasurable historical value, to Japanese manga.”
Bookworms and cinephiles alike will find a selection of titles discussed in Cinema A to Z: Books, many of which can be enjoyed on Hollywood Suite. Select highlights include Pride and Prejudice (1940, 2005), In Cold Blood (1967), Remains of the Day (1993), The English Patient (1996), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Silver Linings Playbook (2012).
Cinema A to Z will continue this fall with a horror-themed episode featuring the greatest monsters in movie history that will tie into Hollywood Suite’s Shocktober programming lineup. Cinema A to Z: Monsters will be available on Hollywood Suite On Demand starting October 1.
