Samsung’s ISOCELL Zoom Anyplace tech: The future of video zoom

Samsung has unveiled its ISOCELL Zoom Anyplace technology, which uses its 200-megapixel sensors to achieve impressive video zoom. The feature can capture both the complete scene and zoomed-in areas simultaneously, and automatically follow and record a moving subject. Samsung first previewed Zoom Anyplace at a press event this month.

The company has not confirmed which devices will support the new feature, but it is likely to be the Galaxy S24 Ultra, its next flagship phone expected to launch early next year. The S24 Ultra is rumoured to have a 200-megapixel main sensor, similar to the S23 Ultra. Samsung’s promo video also shows that the feature is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, the chip rumoured to run the S24 Ultra globally.

Samsung is not the first to offer a zoom feature like this, as Honor 90 had a Solo Cut Mode that offered similar functionality. But Honor’s feature only recorded in 1080p, while Samsung’s version can shoot in 4K even at 4x zoom.

Zoom Anyplace can also zoom in and out during a shot, and Samsung says it can work on subjects near the edge of the frame. Samsung demonstrated the feature with its 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 sensor, which it announced in January 2023.

Samsung also introduced another feature called “End-to-End (E2E) AI Remosaic”, which it claims can reduce image processing time for 200-megapixel images by half. It does this by processing the remosaicing and image signal steps in parallel, instead of sequentially. Samsung says this can also prevent data loss due to latency and produce photos with “richer details and colours.”

Samsung did not say when these features will be available, but we're optimistic they will launch with the Galaxy S24 series as soon as January next year.
