Apple executive joins Oura Ring to lead healthcare strategy

Oura, the maker of a smart ring that tracks sleep quality and other vital signs, has hired Jason Oberfest, a former Apple health executive, to boost its credibility in the healthcare sector. Oberfest joined Apple in 2018 from Mango Health, a startup that helps people manage their medications. He was a key member of Apple’s health team.

Oura’s CEO Tom Hale told Power On that Oberfest will lead the company’s healthcare team and clinical strategy, as Oura is expanding its network of partners and diving deeper into the healthcare world. “Jason’s arrival marks the start of a new chapter for Oura,” Hale said.

The Oura Ring is a wearable device that collects data such as oxygen saturation, heart rate and sleep cycles from the user’s finger. The company has been pushing for more health research and partnerships to make the ring a more useful health tool. For example, it has signed an agreement with a health e-commerce website to allow users to buy the ring with flexible health-care spending accounts or FSAs.
