'Starfield' gets Xbox Play Anywhere support

Image: Bethesda / Microsoft

Starfield is one of the newest Xbox Series X/S exclusives that supports Xbox Play Anywhere, a feature that lets players play the game on both console and PC with a single digital purchase. This doesn’t work for Steam versions of the game, but it’s a great benefit for gamers who want more options and convenience.

Xbox Play Anywhere was a key focus for Microsoft in the final years of the Xbox One generation. Outshone by the PlayStation 4 library, the tech company shifted to other, wider initiatives that aimed to address some of the main challenges of console gaming, such as crossplay and backward compatibility.

Recently, Play Anywhere has been less prominent, not because Microsoft gave up on it but because there haven’t been many new games to feature it. However, Starfield’s page on the Xbox store app has recently been updated with the Xbox Play Anywhere tag, meaning players can use cross-platform saves in Starfield, and if they buy it on either Xbox or PC, they’ll get a copy of the game on the other platform. This only applies to digital purchases, allowing players can switch between Xbox, PC, or Cloud gaming without losing their Starfield progress.
