MWC 2024: Lenovo showcases concept laptop with a see-through screen

Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the way we work, and it will continue to shape the devices we use for work. One example is the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop, a concept device with, as you guessed, a transparent screen. This laptop is designed for collaboration and creativity in a world of AI-generated content.

Unveiled at MWC 2024, this concept laptop features a 17.3-inch micro-LED transparent display that lets you see through the screen to the other side. It allows you to overlay virtual content over the real world, creating a see-through whiteboard effect.

Micro-LED displays are known for their stunning colour, contrast, and brightness, and this ThinkBook’s display is supposed to work the same. It can reach up to 1,000 nits of brightness, making it suitable for any lighting condition, indoors or outdoors. Privacy might be an area of concern, though. But Lenovo plans to make the display’s transparency adjustable to suit your needs.

As part of that AI aspect, Lenovo set up a small camera on the rear side of this laptop's chassis for object recognition. Some of the examples The Verge shared include placing sunflowers behind the screen, and the laptop can identify them. It can show information about the flowers or even have a butterfly flitting around them. Or say, you put a small model of coral, and you'll see fish on the display. It reminds us this device is at that "proof-of-concept" phase.

The Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop also has a unique keyboard, or rather, the lack of one. Instead of physical keys, the laptop has a touchscreen keyboard that can also be turned into a drawing board with a compatible pen. This gives you more flexibility and versatility for your work.

This concept may not appeal to everyone, but it could be the future for creative professionals who want to showcase their digital work in the real world. And we want to see what Lenovo might cook up with this idea.
