Microsoft backtracks on controversial "Recall" feature for Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft is making significant changes to its "Recall" feature after concerns were raised about user privacy. Announced as a way to enhance productivity by capturing screenshots of user activity, Recall was met with criticism for potentially creating a trove of sensitive data vulnerable to misuse.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data watchdog, even launched inquiries into the feature. Microsoft has responded by making Recall opt-in, meaning it will be off by default, and users must explicitly choose to activate it.

Previously touted as a cornerstone of Copilot+ PCs, Recall was envisioned as a powerful AI tool enabling users to search through their entire PC history, including screenshots taken every few seconds. While Microsoft emphasized privacy safeguards, concerns persisted about potential hacker access and unintended exposure of sensitive information.

In a blog post, Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows and devices, acknowledged user feedback and the need for stricter privacy controls. He outlined changes, including requiring Windows Hello authentication for Recall activation and proof of presence for users to access their saved activity timeline.

These updates prioritize user control and aim to address privacy concerns before the official launch of Copilot+ PCs on June 18.
