Google unveils Google TV Streamer: A Chromecast successor with substance

Google has introduced the Google TV Streamer, a US$99.99 (around CA$138) set-top box designed to supersede the Chromecast with Google TV. This sleek device packs a performance punch with a 22% faster processor, double the RAM, and integrated Thread and Matter support.

Beyond raw power, the Streamer introduces a redesigned remote with dedicated volume controls, a customizable button, plus a handy remote finder feature. Google's Gemini AI also makes an appearance, offering content summaries and reviews.

However, the core of the device remains focused on entertainment, with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Chromecast functionality intact. And you'll need that since Google will stop manufacturing Chromecasts.

While the absence of a dongle form factor might disappoint some, the Streamer’s emphasis on performance, smart home integration, and user experience could make it a compelling alternative to higher-priced competitors like the Apple TV 4K.

With a September 24 release date, anticipation is high to see if Google has finally nailed the balance of performance, features, and affordability.
