Apple Watch Series 10 launches with brighter wide-angle OLED screen
Apple Watch Series 10 goes bigger, brighter, and thinner. This 10th-generation smartwatch comes with a 40 percent brighter wide-angle OLED screen. It's the largest display on an Apple Watch yet, beating out even the Apple Watch Ultra. This makes it easier to read what's on the screen.
Despite that, it's also just 9.7mm thick, making it 10 percent thinner and lighter than the Apple Watch Series 9. It also features two slightly larger size options: 42mm and 46mm. The good news is you can still use the straps designed for Series 9 or older. The new straps for the Apple Watch Series 10 are also backward-compatible.
The Apple Watch Series 10 features a polished aluminum finish with a new metal back, integrating its different antennas. It comes in new colours and finishes. There's the new polished aluminum jet black option, plus natural, gold, and slate titanium variants that are 20 percent lighter than the Apple Watch Series 9.
A new S10 System in Package (SiP) powers this smartwatch. It also has a larger charging coil for faster charging. According to Apple, you can recharge the Apple Watch Series 10 to 80 percent capacity in just half an hour. Its battery life is estimated to last up to 18 hours, depending on usage.
One way Apple is trying to improve the battery life of this Apple Watch is by reducing the size of its speakers. The company claims this change doesn't affect sound performance. And for the first time, you can play audio through them. In case you want that, you can now play music, audiobooks, and podcasts through it. Previously, the speakers were only used as a speakerphone for calls.
Sleep apnea detection is also a new feature on the Apple Watch Series 10 (pending FDA approval). It uses the smartwatch's accelerometer to keep track of your breathing when worn during sleep.
Sleep apnea is a condition that causes people to suddenly stop breathing while they sleep. It is typically detected through equipment that monitors someone's heart, brain activity, breathing patterns, and limb movements.
When this Apple Watch detects signs of sleep apnea, it will alert you and share a detailed report you can present to your doctor for an official diagnosis.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is still water-resistant to depths of 50 meters. But it adds some new features for divers and snorkelers. It uses built-in temperature and depth sensors to let you know how deep you are. With watchOS 11, the smartwatch will also get access to Apple's Tides app and improved paddling tracking for kayakers.
watchOS 11 brings other fitness-focused features like a Vitals app, a Training Load measurement, and the option to pause your Activity Rings during rest days. Training Load measurement lets you know if you're above or below your usual activity and training levels.
The Apple Watch Series 10 retails for CA$549. You can pre-order it now. And it comes to stores on September 20.
