Apple still pursuing standalone AR glasses

Apple has reportedly scrapped its plans for Mac-tethered augmented reality (AR) glasses, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The cancelled project, resembling regular glasses with built-in displays, would have required a connection to a Mac computer. This decision, while seemingly a setback, doesn't signal an end to Apple's AR ambitions.  

Instead, Apple is supposedly doubling down on its long-term goal of developing standalone AR glasses similar to high-end prototypes showcased by competitors like Meta. Gurman suggests that John Ternus, head of Apple's Vision Products Group, prioritizes a cautious approach to avoid another product flop. The company continues to invest in the underlying technologies, including advanced screens and silicon, necessary for a truly independent AR experience.

Despite this continued development, a standalone Apple AR headset is still likely several years away, with estimates placing it at three to five years. The existing visionOS platform, however, provides a foundation upon which such a device could be built.
