Apple stops signing iOS 17.3 after 17.3.1 release

Image: Apple

Apple has stopped signing iOS 17.3, meaning downgrading to this version from the newer version iOS 17.3.1 is no longer possible. If you're running iOS 17.4 beta, you can downgrade to 17.3.1 but no longer to 17.3.

Released on January 22, iOS 17.3 brought notable features like Stolen Device Protection for iPhones. It requires Face ID/Touch ID for actions like changing the Apple ID password or disabling Find My. It also introduced collaborative Apple Music playlists. Meanwhile, the newer iOS 17.3.1, released on February 8, addressed a bug causing unexpected text duplication or overlaps while typing.

Analyst predicts iPhone 16 models will have 8GB RAM, Wi-Fi 6E, and a faster 5G modem

Apple will upgrade the RAM on its iPhone 16 models to 8GB, at least according to analyst Jeff Pu. If true, this change is a significant improvement over the 6GB RAM on the iPhone 15 models. Pu’s research note also reveals that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will supposedly support Wi-Fi 6E, a feature that was exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro models will reportedly also have a new Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 5G modem, which is faster and more power-efficient than the X70 modem used in the iPhone 15 series. However, the X75 modem will be reserved for the Pro models, while the regular iPhone 16 models will stick with the X70 modem.

Clicks: The iPhone case that brings back the BlackBerry keyboard

Photo: Clicks

Clicks, a UK-based company, is launching a new iPhone accessory at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. It’s a case with a built-in physical keyboard that lets you type with more feedback and accuracy. It makes it look like you're attaching a BlackBerry keyboard to the bottom of your phone.

The keyboard fits snugly at the bottom of the case without blocking the screen or the phone's side. It also adds some length to the phone, but you can still see everything on the display as you type. The keyboard plugs into the iPhone’s Lighting or USB-C port, depending on your model, and doesn’t interfere with charging. It doesn’t use Bluetooth or batteries, so you don’t have to worry about pairing or power either.

Apple’s new security update adds biometric verification and security delay for your iPhone

Image: Apple

Apple’s new iPhone security update adds extra protection for your personal data. The Stolen Device Protection feature prevents thieves from accessing your information or changing your settings, even if they have your passcode. You will need to use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock your phone, view sensitive data, or make important changes.

Some actions—such as changing your Apple ID password or turning off Find My iPhone—will also require a one-hour security delay and a second biometric verification. This feature only works when you are away from familiar locations, such as your home or work, which your phone learns automatically. It is currently in beta testing, but it will be available for all iPhone users in a future software update.
