American Airlines now supports AirTag tracking for lost bags

American Airlines has integrated Apple's AirTag tracking service, allowing passengers to share the location of their misplaced bags with the airline. This new feature, activated in recent days, aims to expedite the return of lost luggage. Passengers can share their AirTag's location via a QR code at baggage service offices for trips to or from US airports.

American states that less than 1% of bags are mishandled, and most are returned within a day, but this integration should further shorten the wait time for affected travellers.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted, "Get ready to meet the newest member of the family, teasing the event scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, which he affixed with the #AppleLaunch hashtag. Cook's tweet included an animated image of a shimmering Apple logo superimposed on what resembles an AirTag outline, fueling speculation about the long-rumoured AirTag 2. The new tracker is expected to feature an improved range, a more secure speaker, and Apple Vision Pro integration.

Rumours also point to a new iPhone SE announcement. While initially predicted for this week, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggests the SE will arrive by next week, coinciding with Apple's product briefings. Gurman also mentioned a potential Apple Vision Pro announcement and an M4-powered MacBook Air launch "within weeks." With several potential releases in the pipeline, Apple's February 19 event promises to be packed with news.

Apple's AirTag tipped to feature longer range

It might be easier to search for the next-generation Apple AirTag. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports in his Power On newsletter that Apple is working on an AirTag featuring a new ultrawide-band chip similar to the iPhone 15. This processor could triple the range of the rumoured AirTag compared to the current AirTag, which can locate items with Precision Finding from around 10 to 30 meters away.

Next-gen Apple AirTag tipped to be more tamper-proof

Apple is rumoured to be working on the next-generation version of the AirTag. And with concerns over its misuse, the company is supposedly looking to add some privacy improvements to the accessory. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports in his Power On newsletter that Apple is looking to make it tamper-proof, meaning its speaker will be more difficult to remove. Apple added features to the AirTag to help curb unwanted trafficking. One of them is sound alerts that let you know there's an unknown AirTag in your vicinity.

Gurman writes that the second-generation AirTag will also feature an onboard wireless chip and get better range. However, don't expect it to look much different from its predecessor. The new Apple AirTag will supposedly launch in mid-2025.
