Picture-in-picture for YouTube's mobile site is now available for all iOS 14 users

When YouTube started taking advantage of iOS 14's picture-in-picture (PIP) functionality, it was limited to users with a YouTube Premium subscription. But now, the company is allowing all iOS 14 users who use the YouTube mobile website to access the feature, at least through Safari. The native YouTube app has never supported PIP, even for those with Premium accounts. But we'll keep you posted if things change. Apps like Netflix have already started offering the feature, so we're waiting for YouTube to cave.

Microsoft Xbox remote play is coming to iOS

Source: Microsoft

After bringing the feature to Android, we get confirmation that Microsoft is testing Xbox remote play on iOS, too. As you expect, the app connects to your Xbox One (or one of the upcoming consoles) and lets you play the games already available on your system. It isn't like Microsoft's xCloud service, which will run games from the cloud. Sony has something similar with its Remote Play app.

According to The Verge's Tom Warren, the beta app looks stable, and it should arrive on the App Store soon. But Microsoft isn't saying when it'll be available.

iOS 14 lets you set Gmail as your default email app

One of the lesser-known additions to iOS 14 is the option to set your default apps for email and web browsing from Apple's offerings. Chrome on iOS can already be your default browser, but some users seem to have issues where a bug resets it back to Safari when the iPhone restarts. Now, Gmail's newest version (ver. 6.0.200825) can become the default choice on iOS, too.

To make the switch, head to the settings page on your iPhone or iPad and select Gmail. From there, click the Default Mail App option and swap it from the default Mail app.

Integrated Shazam control comes to new iOS 14.2 beta

It's been two years since Apple acquired Shazam, and now it's putting its technology to use. The latest version of iOS 14.2 beta adds Shazam's Music Recognition in the Control Center panel. When the feature is enabled, it can recognize the audio playing on internal or external audio sources. For example, it can identify a song playing through your AirPods—a feature the Android version got last year.

If you're running the beta, you should see the Shazam button in the Control Center already. All you need to do is press on the button. It isn't clear why it took Apple this long to integrate the feature better late than never, we guess.
