Thoughts on the BlackBerry KEYOne Black Edition

By Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla

TCL and BlackBerry Mobile are going a completely different direction from the smartphone industry and it is quite refreshing. The BlackBerry KEYOne, now available in a Space Black edition (as well as a Black Edition), truly goes against the grain. The latest smartphones are removing physical buttons, stretching screens, deleting bezels and yet this BlackBerry Mobile device relishes its QWERTY keyboard legacy as well as all the additional buttons and function keys included.

BlackBerry KEYOne Black Edition is coming to Canada by next week

A meaner looking, more powerful version of the BlackBerry KEYOne is going to land in the country in the coming week and should be out at carriers and some retailers at the end of the month. The KEYOne Black Edition gets a spec bump in terms of RAM and internal storage at 4GB and 64GB, respectively. As its name suggests, it gets an all-black matte finish. Everything else about the design and internals are identical to the original model. This edition will be priced at CA$799 and should be coming to retailers like Amazon, Staples, and Walmart.

TCL following up KEYOne with touchscreen BlackBerry handset

TCL has seen great success with the BlackBerry KEYOne which brings the venerable QWERTY keyboard to a modern and capable Android-powered smartphone.

"Two months from now, we will have a touchscreen solution to show," François Mahieu, head of global sales for TCL, said in a briefing at the IFA tech conference in Berlin on Tuesday. Expected to ship in October, the newest BlackBerry handset. The new device is expected to carry the same high quality build and materials as the KEYOne and should entice users who love their BlackBerry devices but aren't particular about having a QWERTY keyboard.

"The message here is very clearly: Don't write us off as a vendor who has good success with KeyOne so far, but has nothing more to talk about," said Mahieu. "We're here to stay and we're going to roll out more BlackBerry products in the coming years, starting this year."
