Dropbox shuts down Mailbox and Carousel

It seems to be a bad day for lesser-known apps by big companies. Dropbox is closing the door on two of its apps: Mailbox and Carousel. The email app and photo app are both getting the boot because they don’t get enough users to warrant Dropbox to keep them on. The company has decided to bring popular features of these apps into its main app and its Paper app. Key features of Carousel will be brought to dropbox and bits and pieces of Mailbox will make its way to Paper. There will also be “new ways” to collaborate and communicate with Dropbox.

You have until February 26th to retrieve any email you need from Mailbox before it shuts down for good. Carousel gives you until March 31st to do some downloading or transferring once Dropbox makes that available (which we think they will).

Dropbox’s Carousel photo gallery app gets Web and iPad versions

Dropbox has brought its photo gallery app Carousel to iPad and Web. Now, you can access and share photos stored on your Dropbox account much more easily. It has been optimized for easier viewing online or on Apple’s tablet. They have also tweaked the design to make it easier to scroll through grid view and use lightbox and conversations. You can now double-tap to zoom in lightbox and the delete button has been repositioned for easier access. Unlike the iPhone and Android smartphone version, there is a landscape mode for all functions in the iPad. Dropbox says the Android tablet version will be coming out in two weeks.
