Ford setting the foundation for autonomous and driverless cars

Ford is chasing the futurw and has started by investing in or collaborating with four startups to enhance its autonomous vehicle development, doubling its Silicon Valley team and more than doubling its Palo Alto campus.

“The next decade will be defined by automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago,” said Mark Fields, Ford Motor Company president and CEO. “We’re dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people – not just those who can afford luxury vehicles.”

Ford's GT configurator lets you customize the supercar as you like it

Whether you actually have the funds to buy one or not, Fords new GT supercar can be yours, or at least seem like it is, when you design how it looks with the car's online configurator. It lets the potential 500 buyers design the car how they would like it to look. The changes are rather simple though, you can customize the interior and exterior color choices, wheel choices, and the like. On the site, there also seems to be two Series options that are listed as coming soon, these might be some special edition liveries for a special car.

Ford's new police vehicle doors can stop armour-piercing bullets

Forget technology, Ford has just upped the ante on armoured police vehicles which can now stop armour-piercing bullets.

Coming soon to Ford Interceptor sedans and SUV's, the doors are designed to stop a .30-calibre shot from a high-powered rifle. Crafted from ceramic tile, which breaks up the bullet and with a layer of Kevlar-like weave that can catch the shrapnel.

Previous versions of Ford's ballistic panels, which cost $1,500 per door,  could protect against handgun fire and non-armour piercing rounds, these upgrades level the playing field against tactical weapons and high-powered automatic handguns and rifles. Ford says the doors are strictly for law enforcement and will not be sold to non-police customers.
