Google Play Movies might offer free, ad-supported films soon

Google Play Movies might be trying to lure in more people by offering free ad-supported movies that you can stream. XDA found lines of code in version 4.18.37 of the app's Android version that this feature might be in our immediate future. The announcement message included words like "hundreds of movies" that could be available with "just a few ads." 9to5Google speculates it could be similar to Vudu, which is a movie and TV marketplace on its own but also has a rotating library of free, ad-supported content that can be watched.

The lines of code also show the feature asking users to provide birthdates, perhaps to keep children from watching R-rated films. And it seems there will also be a notification when an ad is in progress when the content is being cast to a Chromecast target. There is no timeline when Google might release this feature. But with the COVID-19 pandemic keeping a lot of us at home, now might be the best time for Google to introduce the feature.

Google Play Movies supports Netflix, Disney+ search

Google Play Movies in the US now makes it easier for you to look for the content you want. The app now integrates Netflix and Disney+ into its search function. You can add these two through the Manages services option in the Play Movies' menu. So, the next time you perform a search, it'll add either or both of those services if the content you're looking for is there. You would need to have the app on your phone to start playing what you want to watch.

As we mentioned, it isn't available here yet, and it doesn't support the streaming of live TV. Now, we wonder when Apple TV+ will be added, too.

Google Play Movies might get Dolby Vision support

A recent app teardown by Google Play Movies suggests that the app might be getting Dolby Vision support. The presence of the code doesn't necessarily mean that it'll become an actual feature. But it does hint at the possibility of the feature coming to the app. It also makes sense for the streaming app to get support for Dolby Vision. Play Movies already supports 4K HDR and HDR10. 

Dolby Vision will improve on what HDR10 can offer, making it possible for brightness, darkness, and colour profiles to change from scene to scene. The code XDA Developers found hints at the app being able to inform you if the video you're watching supports Dolby Vision. Again, it isn't clear if Google will roll this feature out officially. But we will keep our eye out for it. 

Peter Dinklage-led film ‘Rememory’ gets early release on Google Play Movies

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you would know who Peter Dinklage is. The GoT star has a new movie coming out soon and it’s first making its debut on Google Play Movies. And did we mention it’ll be released for free? Rememory¸ which stars Dinklage, Julia Ormond, and the late Anton Yelchin, is set to hit Play Movies on August 24^th and select US theatres starting September 8^th.

The science fiction thriller has Dinklage playing Sam Bloom. He tries to uncover the mystery surrounding the death of an inventor by using his newest creation: a device that can extract and replay someone’s memories. If this seems interesting to you, you can catch it first on Google Play Movies.
