Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is going to be taking a stab at making his first animated feature film, and it’s a story close to his heart. Del Toro will be directing, writing, and producing Netflix’s stop motion musical version of Pinocchio. The classic children’s story about a puppet who wanted to be a real live boy will be set in Italy during the 1930s, which is a particularly fraught time in the country. Fascism was on the rise with Benito Mussolini consolidating his control over Italy. Del Toro is no stranger to setting his stories against totalitarian backdrops, he’s done so in the past with films like Pan’s Labyrinth.

Upcoming Guillermo del Toro film 'The Shape of Water' gets December 2017 release date

Guillermo del Toro's upcoming project The Shape of Water gets a December 8th release date in the US, placing it right in the middle of Hollywood's award nomination season. It’s said to take him back to his more intimate productions like Pan's Labyrinth instead of the bigger blockbusters his done recently. And perhaps that's a good thing as Pan's Labyrinth has won Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Makeup, and Cinematography.

The Shape of Water is described as an "other-worldly fairy tale" set in the Cold War. It stars Sally Hawkins as Elisa who works at a top-secret government facility that houses a classified experiment that comes in the form of an "aquatic man." The man will be played by Doug Jones and Hawkins's co-worker will be played by Octavia Spencer.
