Rumours of HTC entering the wireless sports camera market have just been confirmed. The company just unveiled the HTC RE, a pipe/periscope-like device. Its shape is reportedly meant to make the 96.7x26.5 mm camera better to hold and it has extra sensors in the grip area that turns it on when you hold it. It has one shutter button that takes both 16-megapixel still shots and 1080p videos and has a wide-angle 146-degree lens. It is IP57 waterproof even without a case and comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
There is a RE-specific app on Android and iOS that will let you basic edit, share, and create time-lapse videos. It will eventually let you live broadcast on YouTube as well. It will come with an 8GB micro SD card in its slot but you can add up to 128GB via micro SD. Its 920 mAh battery will last for 100 minutes of video or 1,200 shots and can be charged via micro USB. It will be available in four colours in the US with a US$199.99 base price. International release is planned but there is no specific date yet.
