Huawei sells in China a protective case that lets you bring the Mate 20 Pro underwater

While the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has IP68 protection for water- and dust-resistance, this isn’t enough to take the phone under water so you can take photos and videos. That’s why the company is selling in China’s Vmall.com a special Diving Case, which will let you use its advertised underwater camera mode. The case is designed to withstand pressure of up to five metres for one hour. It can be brought to the sea as it can be used in salt water. Underwater use is easy with the protruding buttons on the side and its camera mode makes use of an intelligent image processing so it can capture stills and videos sans distortion. The case is being sold for CNY 599 (around CA$110). Unfortunately, there’s no word yet whether it’ll be brought out of China but we’re hoping it would be.

By Emily Chung

As the Motoring Editor, I appreciate technology in smartphones because vehicles have similar advances. What we see revealed in the smartphone industry is shared in the automotive industry. Case-in-point, AI technology is now used in smartphones and new vehicles.

The Huawei Mate20Pro is released in Canada this week (November 8) through major carriers and I had the opportunity to test out the device since its global reveal in London, UK last month. With a few weeks under my belt, I wanted to experience the value of Huawei’s newest smartphone in my everyday routine and share with you a practical review.

Huawei's monster camera smartphone the Mate 20 Pro comes to Canada this fall

2018 has been Huawei's big year in disrupting the premium smartphone market mostly on the merit of their stellar Leica designed cameras. This year's P20 Pro was a standound flagship that challenged the likes of Samsung and Apple while leapfrogging the market with superb zoom functionality.

Launched yesterday at an even in London was the Mate 20 Pro which is reportedly coming to Canada in November with preorders starting on October 25. The Mate 20 Pro brings a slim, tall 6.3-inch profile, curved glass infinity-display and three camera array to the market.

Huawei follows Apple's footsteps by offering the second 7 nanometer mobile processor in the market (the first for an Android-powered device). As for the defining feature of this device, it's three camera array, Huawei has gotten rid of the monochrome camera that was a popular feature on on the P10 and the P20 Pro.

This time around we get a telephoto lens, a wide angle lens, and an ultra-wide angle lens. Stay tuned for first impressions of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro in the coming weeks.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro spotted on a subway train

There seems to be an ongoing trend of soon-to-be-announced phones showing up on subways (the last one being the Google Pixel 3 XL). This time we see a man holding what looks to be the Huawei Mate 20 Pro while he takes a subway ride. While the front of the device doesn’t really stand out, the rear shows a Twilight-like color with the triple camera system in a square setup. The fingerprint-smudged rear also has what you see a barcode sticker, which usually signifies it’s a prototype or test unit.
