Huawei will launch Mate 40 series on Oct. 22

Huawei's Mate flagship is getting an update with a scheduled launch for the Mate 40 series on October 22. It's the latest Huawei device to launch without access to the Google Play Store and Google Mobile Services. It also might be the last Huawei handset to be powered by a Kirin processor. US trade restrictions and bans have severely affected the Android experience on these handsets. But Huawei has been steadily developing its AppGallery to make up for that. It might not be enough for some users who are expecting the full access to Android and Google apps.

The company hasn't revealed much beyond the tagline "Leap Further Ahead." So, we're going to have to wait and see what Huawei is cooking up to try and convince smartphone buyers to consider their new flagship.

Huawei Mate 40 to be last Kirin-powered model

The Trump administration's ban on Huawei has now affected who supplies the company's chipset. Huawei has confirmed that the upcoming Huawei Mate 40 smartphone will be the last model to be powered by a Kirin processor. Because of the ban, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) concluded its business with Huawei, which affects its HiSilicon subsidiary behind its Kirin chips.

With the company still banned from conducting business with US companies, they find themselves losing TSMC, who gets some of its equipment from US suppliers. TSMC opted to wrap up its chip production orders from Huawei, but it won't be producing anymore. Huawei has focused on designing its processors but not manufacturing them, so now it finds itself in a tight spot. The company hasn't revealed what it plans to do moving forward.

Huawei Canada reveals winners of Next-G video contest

Huawei Canada has just announced which budding Canadian filmmakers won its first-ever Next-G video contest. Around 50 post-secondary students enrolled in select video production programs in Canada were invited to produce and shoot a short film recorded exclusively on the Huawei P40 Pro, which the company provided to the contestants. They were given 30 days to shoot and edit their submissions, telling a story of their choosing.

Huawei P40 Pro to launch in Canada on July 10

After launching in markets like Europe and Southeast Asia, the Huawei P40 series will be making its way to Canada. The company will be debuting the P40 Pro first on July 10, with the P40 arriving at an unspecified later date. It will be coming to multiple carriers, and it will be available in Black and Silver Frost.

We don't have the official pricing yet. But a limited-time offer will give buyers a free Huawei Watch GT 2, and 12 months subscription of 50GB Huawei cloud storage. On top of that, Huawei P40 Pro owners can join the Huawei Next Image Awards, where they can stand a chance to win up to US$10,000 (around CA$13,607).
