Jack Dorsey is no longer Twitter CEO

Photo by Brett Jordan on Unsplash

In a surprising yet on-brand move, Twitter's Jack Dorsey has announced on Twitter (of course) that he resigned as the company's CEO. In his tweet, Dorsey even shared his internal email talking about his resignation. According to the email, Dorsey feels it's time for the company to transition from a "founder-led" system to something greater. Dorsey and Twitter's other board members have appointed successors.

Former Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal is now Twitter's CEO. Bret Taylor, a member of Twitter's board, is now the new chairman. Dorsey will serve the rest of his term until around May. This resignation isn't the first time for Dorsey. He left back in 2008, but he returned in 2015.

Twitter flags Trump's tweet on Minneapolis riots for glorifying violence

Twitter has flagged another one of US President Donald Trump's tweets, this time for glorifying violence in the wake of riots taking place in Minneapolis where citizens are protesting against the police for the death of George Floyd at the hands of his arresting officer who was fired, but still walks free. Riots escalated for the third day in a row and resulted in the burning of a police station and various injuries to both police and protesters.

Trump fired off a series of tweets condemning the protests by "thugs," and threatening to send in the National Guard to "get the job done right." Another tweet from Trump included, "when the looting starts, the shooting starts," but was hidden by Twitter because it violated their terms of service for inciting violence.

Twitter CEO gives us the ‘It’s complicated’ spiel for editable tweets

Safe to say, it’ll make our lives easier if Twitter opted to add an edit feature to our tweets. But apparently, it isn’t as easy as it would be but it looks like Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been giving it some thought. When asking users what they want to see Twitter improve on, people are asking for the ability to edit. And Dorsey looks like he wants that for users, too. However, it doesn’t seem to be as easy a task or rather there are things to consider, including whether this should be for quickly editing mistakes or edit anytime.

Adding this feature will require work on the backend but it’ll also affect how the service works. As The Verge points out, what if someone edited an old tweet that you retweeted and it turns out different from what you wanted to share. It’ll take a lot of work on Twitter’s part to see how this can be implemented. But it looks like they are at least thinking about this.

Twitter names Jack Dorsey as CEO

Twitter has settled on making Jack Dorsey its permanent CEO after he held the position as the interim chief. Twitter plans to have a separate chairman though. Dorsey, at the same time though, is the head of mobile payments company Square. Twitter aims to rekindle growth following a rather abysmal result from the last quarter. Investors and analysts have praised faster product rollouts since Dorsey took over for Dick Costolo back in July.

According to Peter Currie, Twitter’s lead independent director, “To further simplify the demands on his time as well as to make sure we bring a fresh voice and new leadership to the board, the board has decided to separate the chair and CEO roles.”
