Android Auto can be used wirelessly, but only available to a select few

For those wishing to be untethered when they use Android Auto in their cars, your prayers have been answered… sort of. There are a few caveats. One is that it only works with select Pixel and Nexus devices as well as specific head units that are Wi-Fi-certified. The smartphones you need would be the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Nexus 5, or the Nexus 6P. JVC and Kenwood have a few head units that are Wi-Fi-certified but a lot of these haven’t hit the market yet.

If you’re one of the select few that does have access to these devices, setup is pretty painless. You first have to connect your phone via USB to set the feature up. But once you’ve done that, you can connect your phone to your dash wirelessly the next time. Google says they do plan to support other phones in the future. So we’re keeping an eye out for that.

JVC outs first Apple CarPlay receiver

JVC is bringing Apple’s technology into older cars with its new receiver. The KW-V820BT is an aftermarket receiver that comes with CarPlay. It has a 6.8-inch resistive touchscreen, Bluetooth audio, and standalone Spotify and Pandora apps. With CarPlay you get access to the suite of iOS apps including Maps, Music, Messages, and Phone. And once iOS 10 update comes, you’ll get the Parked Car feature that will tag your parked vehicle’s location so you don’t forget where you parked. The KW-V820BT retails for US$600 (approx. CA$770).

CES 2016: JVC commits to Apple CarPlay with new head unit

JVC introduced a new flagship multimedia receiver to its head unit line. The KW-V820BT is the first JVC model to incorporate Apple CarPlay, which uses the intuitive Siri voice-driven interface and an approved selection of touch-based icons to enable the safe operation of the apps, content, communications and connectivity of an attached iPhone.

The KW-V820BT also brings back JVC Mobile’s popular “EL KAMELEON” moniker, which signifies a head unit that resists theft with a full-black, button-less face when turned off. When powered on, all of the double-DIN receiver’s controls display along the sides of the 6.8-inch clear resistive touch control.
