Netflix confirms sixth season for ‘House of Cards’ sans Kevin Spacey

It seems House of Cards producers have finally worked out how to make the sixth season of the political drama to work. Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos just confirmed that the original series will be coming back to its service with an eight-episode season in early 2018. Netflix previously announced it wasn’t bringing the show back if they kept its star Kevin Spacey, who has sexual assault allegations against him. With Spacey out, the upcoming season will center on Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood character.

Netflix won’t work with Kevin Spacey moving forward after sexual harassment allegations against the actor surfaced

Netflix took a step forward on top of just cancelling House of Cards, the streaming service announced it wasn’t going to be involved in any further production of House of Cards that involved Kevin Spacey. The service said they are working with Media Rights Capital while the show is on hiatus “to evaluate our path forward as it relates to the show.” Netflix is also not going to move forward with the film Gore, which stars and is produced by Spacey, despite it being in post-production already. MRC says they’ve also suspended the actor from production, effective immediately.

Following Anthony Rapp’s revelation of Spacey’s reported sexual abuse against him, more people came forward detailing sexual harassment allegations against the actor with multiple accounts happening during the production of House of Cards. Before the news broke, production for the sixth season of the show was well underway. And when it came out, it’s been announced the season was going to be the show’s final season but at the moment both Netflix and MRC have put production on hold. The show’s producers are said to be considering how they’re going to move forward from here. Speculation says they might kill of Spacey’s character or concentrate on creating spin-off shows. This is far from the actor’s problems though as he has also been dropped by his publicist and talent agency CAA.

Netflix cancels ‘House of Cards’ following sexual assault allegations against star Kevin Spacey surface

House of Cards is one of the biggest productions Netflix has ever produced but now it gets the rug pulled out from under it after allegations that its star and executive producer Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted Star Trek: Discovery star Anthony Rapp in 1986 back when he was 14. While the show was scheduled to be wrapped up soon, this scandal can be considered the tipping point for Netflix and producer Media Rights Capital to cancel the show. The two companies say in a statement, “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night's news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night's revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Spacey also issued his own statement saying he was “beyond horrified” about Rapp’s story but that he doesn’t recall the incident. In the same statement, he also says he chooses to “live as a gay man” from this point on, which has him criticized by GLAAD and gay activists because it seems like a deflection from Rapp’s accusation. Filming for the sixth season began in Maryland this month but there’s no specific premiere date yet. Season five premiered May 30 on Netflix.

Kevin Spacey looks like he’s taking cues from his character, Frank Underwood, in House of Cards with this new gig with Activision. Spacey will be playing the main antagonist of the new Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare game as the head of a private military corporation that has turned against the US government. Activision wants to whet our appetites early. The game is set to be released by November 4, 2014.
