Kickstarter for Dyslexie font hopes to help out people with dyslexia

It’s impossible to put yourself in the shoes of someone else. So if you don’t understand what it must be like for dyslexics, then we can’t blamed you. But that doesn’t mean you can’t help them out. Christian Boer, a dyslexia sufferer and the man behind Dyslexie, hopes to make it easier for dyslexics to navigate the digital world. He created the typeface Dyslexie and designed the letters in a way that makes it difficult for people to flip or twist them while reading. He used things like letter weights, making them bolder at the base; larger capital letters; and bigger spaces between words. The font is available for Mac and PC users.

But Boer takes this a step further with a Kickstarter campaign for things like creating a PDF converter to change any document typeface into the Dyslexie font and a web browser extension to do the same for web pages. The campaign has around 34 days to go and a bit far from its 35,000 euros (around CA$50,500) target. But if this is something you’d like to get involved in, you can do so here.

Smart alarm clock promises to regulate your sleep patterns

A new Kickstarter project introduces a smart alarm clock built to help regularize sleeping patterns. It doesn’t focus on tracking your actual sleeping time but more on helping you establish better sleeping habits. Kello only gives you a number of snooze hits per week and once you’ve reached this, you can’t silence the alarm without completely turning it off. The smart clock can even trigger other Wi-Fi-connected devices and have all the notifications pour into your devices once you hit snooze or even turn on the light if you’ve hit your snooze quota.

Aside from lessening your reliance on the snooze button, Kello also has a built-in breathing exercise program to help you fall asleep faster. The process is guided by lights and lasts around 20 minutes or so. You can control this mode and all the other settings of the clock via its companion iOS and Android app. The Kello is expected to ship by March 2017, but this is Kickstarter so you have to be wary, too.

Tape measure gets smart with Bagel

It’s no surprise that even tape measures are getting tagged “smart.” This time, a new Kickstarter project by Bagel Labs is hoping you back this smart tape measure called Bagel. The measuring device offers three measure modes, saves your measurements, records voice memos, and syncs all these data with a companion mobile app.

You can use it in string mode to get measurements that you would with a regular analog tool. It can do this for up to 10 feet. It also comes with a strong Dyneema string so it can withstand up to 112lbs. Aside from that, wheel mode will let you roll it on its side to measure curved distances with one hand. Meanwhile, remote mode has a laser pointer to measure horizontal and vertical distances. To snag one of these Bagels, you can pledge US$59 to get the unit with an accompanying micro-USB cable. This gives roughly a 45 percent discount off its estimated suggested retail price.

Pictar camera grip interacts with your iPhone via ultrasonic waves

Feeling a bit envious about the LG G5 Friends camera module? A new Kickstarter project by Miggo hopes to recreate that experience with its Pictar accessory. The $90 USD accessory attaches to the back of your iPhone to give you physical buttons and a better hold on your phone when you shoot. Instead of Bluetooth, it connects to your phone using ultrasonic waves. It’ll emit an ultrasonic sound every time you press one of the buttons and this will be picked up by the iPhone’s mic. You’ll need to be using Pictar’s app to get this to work though. The good thing about using ultrasonic noise is it won’t drain your iPhone’s battery life and the case’s own juice at a faster rate. But we’re not sure how it’ll work in noisy environments. If you plan on getting one, Miggo plans to ship the Pictar by the end of the year.
