LaCie drops the first external USB-C external drive for new MacBook

Known for stylin' hard drives that reflect and fit nicely into the Mac and Apple design landscape, LaCie has announced it is making some Porsche Design Mobile Drives for the new MacBook. These will have capacities of 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB  wiith up to 5 Gb/s transfer speeds and will use the hotly divisive single USB-C port on the MacBook (or a USB 3.0 adaptor). Isn't it amazing how in just a few days after Apple's MacBook reveal, USB-C is now a thing? We're expecting even more  USB-C MacBook accessories to be announced shortly.

LaCie introduces spherical hard drive

Wanting to produce unique-looking hard drives, LaCie partnered with silversmithing firm Christofle in 2011. This year’s limited edition hard drive comes in the form of a silver sphere aptly called the LaCie Sphere. The 1TB drive looks like a high-end Google Nexus Q with a single USB 3.0 port and a blue status light located at the base. Unveiled at CES, the Sphere is expected to launch during the first quarter of this year at around $490.

Seagate acquires LaCie

Seagate Technology plc. and LaCie S.A.  announced the completion of the purchase by Seagate of all of the shares of Philippe Spruch and his affiliate, representing 64.5% of the outstanding shares of LaCie for a provisional price of €4.05 per share. The price payable to Philippe Spruch and his affiliate may be increased by 3%, to €4.17 per share, in the event that within six months following today's date, Seagate holds at least 95% of the share capital and voting rights of LaCie.
