'Mario Kart Tour' to stop adding new content after Oct. 4

Nintendo

Mario Kart Tour, the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular racing series, is ending its original content updates after October 4. Nintendo announced that the game will only have three more "tours" (multiplayer events) before rehashing previous ones. This means there won't be new courses, drivers, karts, gliders, or features will be after that date.

The game will still be playable, but without new content, it may lose many players over time. Nintendo did not explain why they decided to stop developing new content for the game, which has been a financial success for them. The game has earned nearly US$300 million as of last year, making it Nintendo’s second-most profitable mobile title after Fire Emblem Heroes.

Nintendo will release ‘Mario Kart Tour’ beta starting next month

We don’t really know much about this new mobile spin-off of Mario Kart, but it is coming. Nintendo just announced a “Closed Beta Test” for Mario Kart Tour. This sneak peek will be available to Android users in the US and Japan between May 22nd and June 4th. If you’re in either countries and want to check it out, you can sign up using the QR code on the official Mario Kart Tour website. The game is set to debut in “summer 2019” alongside Doctor Mario, a game Nintendo co-developed with messaging company Line. And yes, Mario Kart Tour is coming to iOS, too.

‘Mario Kart’ is coming to smartphones

The latest Nintendo IP to make its way to mobile devices is a popular one. The Japanese company just announced that it’s bringing Mario Kart to both Android and iOS. The game is going to be called Mario Kart Tour and it’ll be released within the next financial year, which puts that between April 2018 and March 2019. Nintendo is keeping mum about what we can expect from the game but we’re confident the title will be a popular one as this particular franchise is one of Nintendo’s biggest.

As Fortune points out, the company was careful in wording the release to be a mobile-only release instead of saying which platform it’ll be available on. Nintendo has previously been releasing its mobile games on iOS before Android but the wording suggests both platforms might get it simultaneously. What do you think? Is this something you’d want to play?
