Microsoft gets rid of the ‘Online’ name for its Office web apps

You no longer have to call apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with the “Online” branding if you’re using the web apps. The company plans to drop this for its Office Online suite of apps. It does make sense to just drop the Online name, since using it through the web basically means you are online. However, this might cause some confusion when Microsoft tries to differentiate the web version from its desktop and mobile apps. Microsoft said it’ll just call them “Office for the web” to clarify things, which if you think about it is what the Online name did for them anyway. That said, other Microsoft products will still hang on to the Online descriptor. These include Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Project Online, and Office Online Server.

Microsoft integrates Skype into Office Online

If you’re working on a report in Microsoft’s Office Online, it is now easier to collaborate with others. They have integrated Skype into the online productivity suite. You don’t need to fire up a separate app or a new browser window. The Skype chat window will appear alongside the docs you’re working on.

Microsoft adds chat capabilities to Office Online

Furthering online collaboration (and obviously taking cues from Google Drive), Microsoft is introducing chat feature to Word and PowerPoint online. Like in Google Drive, this means you can talk to your colleagues about a document or presentation you’re working on. It’ll even send you notifications for when you need to respond or wait for their comment to pop up on the sidebar. The feature will reportedly be rolling out in the coming weeks.
