Microsoft Surface Duo is coming to Canada on Feb. 18

Microsoft's first foldable device, the Surface Duo, will be arriving in the country on February 18. It will be the first time the Surface Duo will be available outside of the US. It's also coming to the UK, France, and Germany on the same day. We don't have the Canadian pricing yet, but in the US, it's currently available at the discounted price of $999.

The Surface Duo has understandably been hit by negative reviews, even by our founder, Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla. Unfortunately, this well-built, Android-powered device failed to meet its potential. As GSMArena points out, it might be more prudent to wait until its price drops before you decide to get one.

Teardown shows Microsoft Surface Duo's 'refreshingly simple hinge design'

iFixit gives us a look at a pulled apart Microsoft Surface Duo, giving us a better look at what powers the dual-screened gadget. According to the video, it isn't easy to separate its parts, making it hard to replace most of the device yourself. The only components that can easily be removed include the displays and the back glass covers.

Surface Duo shipping September 10 for US$1,400

Microsoft's anticipated re-entry into the smartphone space, as well as its big showcase of its hardware technology is the Surface Duo. Announced to be coming to the US only on September 10, for $1,399 and featuring middling specs, this foldable is sparking all sorts of mixed reactions.

Surface Duo and the larger Surface Neo were teased last year and slated for release in Christmas 2020. That the Surface Duo is being made available sooner is somewhat of a surprise even if it has been leaked and teased ad nauseam by Microsoft's executives. With dual 5.6 displays that fold to simulate a larger 8-inch tablet form factor, Microsoft has avoided calling this device a smartphone and played down its connectivity and calling capability (possibly because it lacks critical components expected from flagship smartphones, namely NFC for mobile payments and 5G capability).

The Surface Duo runs Android 10 but is slanted towards the Microsoft Launcher and Office 365 productivity and apps. A lot has been made about its revolutionary hinge, hinges being a key surface feature, as well as the various modes that the device can be used. Microsoft is aiming at enterprise with the Surface Duo, at leas that is how they are justifiying the insane price they are charging for what is essentially an underpowered smartphone.

Microsoft Surface Duo might launch soon

There are hints that the Microsoft Surface Duo might be ready to launch. The Verge reports that the dual-screen, Android-powered device has shown up in FCC and Bluetooth listings. Gadgets that appear in these pages are usually a few weeks away from launch. Recent reports claim the Surface Duo is launching this month, but that doesn't seem to be the case. However, that doesn't mean that it won't arrive soon.

The Surface Duo and other dual-screen devices were supposedly going to be the focus at Build earlier this year. But plans shifted when the pandemic hit. As with the delay of Windows 10X dual-screen devices, the Surface Duo got pushed back, too. Developers were supposed to get early access to developer units, but the pandemic impacted this plan. But, if the reports are correct, it might still ship by the end of September.
