'Minecraft' will get PSVR support this month

Mojang/Sony

If you own a PlayStation VR and play Minecraft, you'll appreciate this new announcement from Sony. The company revealed on Monday morning that the game would get PSVR support this month. It won't announce a firm release date yet as the free update is still not quite ready. The update will roll out for all PlayStation 4 players.

Minecraft's developer Mojang worked with SkyBox Labs to refit its virtual reality tech it uses on other platforms to work on the PSVR. The update will let you play Minecraft's entirety on the PSVR, with two primary VR modes: Immersive and Living Room (a.k.a. virtual screen). There will also be more settings to tweak, so the game plays to your liking.

Early access of 'Minecraft Earth' will launch in October

Mojang and Microsoft will soon take the augmented reality game Minecraft Earth out of the beta test and into early access. The companies announced it'd be available in some countries starting next month. But they didn't specify which countries or platforms will have the game. What we know is it'll be available for both Android and iOS.

As Engadget notes, Minecraft Earth is a departure from the core Minecraft experience. World-building is still at its core. You can create worlds in AR, but it also encourages you to step out into the real world. It lets you embark on shareable Adventures where you take on monsters and other challenges to earn rare resources. We'll let you know once we hear more details about the game.

'Minecraft' design overhaul has been axed

Mojang/Microsoft

Minecraft won't stick with its look forever, but it looks like it's going to take some time before it gets an overhaul. Mojang just announced that it won't release the Super Duper Graphics Pack visual redesign. After two years of delays, the developer decided that it was "too technically demanding" to implement. And the company wasn't "happy" with the upgrade's performance across platforms. Instead of providing inconsistent quality across platforms, Mojang decided to just shut down the project.

The promise was to enable 4K on the Xbox One X as well as introduce more sophisticated visuals effects for areas like the atmosphere, highlights, and water. It doesn't mean that Minecraft won't get a redesign, though. Mojang is still "looking into other ways" to give Minecraft a new look. And that it has news on optimizing the constructive games on different platforms "very soon."
