Nest rumoured to be launching a 4K security camera

If you've been wondering when Nest will unveil new products, it seems your wait isn't going to be very long. Nest is reportedly launching a 4K security camera in a week or so. The rumoured Nest Cam will be a special one, though. While it records footage in 4K, it won't be saving or streaming the footage in that resolution. Nest will be taking advantage of the resolution boost to give it a better zoom function. So, if the camera spots something moving in its frame, it'll trim down the video to 1080p and give you a zoomed in shot that's still in Full HD.

This move is seen as a boon more than a bane as it'll be easier for most homeowners to stream content in Full HD than in 4K. Storage and bandwidth wouldn't be much of an issue, too. Some of the new features tipped to be coming to this Nest Cam include the ring around the lens lighting up when it's recording, a USB Type-C port will be used to power the camera, and some Nest subscription-only features will be opened up to all users (like person alerts). There will be a significant price bump, though. This new Nest Cam is rumoured to be coming in at US$300, which will be over $100 more than the older model.

Nest gets Android TV support

Nest brings to your Android TV the only “reality TV you actually care about” with support for said television operating system. Anyone who owns a Nest Cam and an Android TV will now be able to watch what happened at home through the TV. It lets you scrub through the video history and lets you switch between feeds (in case you have multiple cameras). You can link your Nest Cam to your Android TV through this download link.

Aside from that, Nest also turns the Nest Cam into something that can take your digital holiday card. With Nest Aware you can create an Instaclip or a short video you can share over social media. For example, you can record what’s happening in your living room during Christmas morning and share that clip with your loved ones.
