Visa-powered NFC Ring now available for pre-order

The NFC Ring, a Visa-powered payment ring, is making its way out of the Olympics and into the hands of the public. The ring, which was used by some of the athletes at the Rio Olympics is now up for pre-order. This accessory gives its users a more convenient way to pay for things at stores. Since the Olympians were inspired by the creation of the NFC Ring, it’s built to be water resistant for up to 50 meters and doesn’t need charging. It draws a bit of power from the payment terminal, just enough to make the transaction. The ring is available for £39.99 (roughly $60 CAD) and is expected to ship by December 2016.

The NFC Ring is real and blowing up on Kickstarter!

This is one of those ideas where I scold myself for not being first with it. Simple and brilliant, the NFC (Near Field Communication) Ring is plastic, NFC-lined ring you wear on your finger which can be coded to carry data needed for NFC transactions. Designed to make your life easier. Not only can it be used for such mundane tasks as unlocking your phone or passing along your information, it can also be used for unlocking NFC-enabled doors (when they're available).

NFC has been a staple feature of many smartphones and tablets, even notebooks, speakers and cameras. Touted as the go-to solution for mobile banking and cashless payments, NFC hasn't really taken off as an e-payment standard. Projects like the NFC Ring can push the technology to the mainstream.
