OnePlus 3/3T and 5/5T won’t support Project Treble

We know that Android 8.1 Oreo is coming to both the OnePlus 5/5T devices as well as the OnePlus 3/3T. The latter is especially welcome news. There is no specific time table for the updates yet. But we find out more information about it. One of the newest pieces of information we got is that the company will not support Project Treble, a feature that aims to bring faster updates to Android devices. This does this by separating the operating system code from the vendor code, letting vendors push key OS updates to the phones without the need to re-optimize their own codes. OnePlus Staff Member Adam Krisko, who was doing an AMA on the OnePlus Forums, broke the news but he didn’t say why they didn’t intend to support Treble for these devices.

OnePlus 3 & 3T gets Oxygen OS 4.1.7 update

While OnePlus has turned most of its focus to the OnePlus 5, it’s good to know they’re at least addressing some issues with the previous generation OnePlus 3 and 3T. The Oxygen OS 4.1.7 brings with it bug fixes and security patches for the two devices. One of the issues it’s fixed is one with the App Locker, which is meant to keep certain apps behind a PIN or password. They have fixed an exploit that bypasses the App Locker. The device doesn’t require Google Hangouts to be installed now either. On the security side, the patch is now updated to August 2017, bringing it up from the May 2017 patch. Other changes coming to the update include unspecified battery optimization as well as a quicker user experience with it. If you use either devices, keep your eyes peeled for the update, it should do you better.

Android O will be the last OS update for OnePlus 3/3T

OnePlus 3T

We have some bad news for OnePlus 3 and 3T owners. The two devices will only get Android O as its last major software update. With the company turning its attention to OnePlus 5, we're not surprised that this is happening. However, if we think about the timeline, it's been relatively short and both will fall short of the standard two-year cycle for software updates. The OnePlus 3 came out just June of last year, while the 3T came out just November of 2016. Technically, this will be the second major update for the OnePlus 3. But it does feel like there could be room for one more. OnePlus does mention that there will be security patch updates coming to the devices in the "foreseeable future" but its Open Beta Program will be moving to the OnePlus 5 once the two devices have been updated to Android O.

OnePlus 3 to get Nougat update before end of 2016

Sometimes we wish all manufacturers roll out Android updates as quickly as they can. One company who is trying to get it right is OnePlus. After merging its two separate software teams (the China-only HydrogenOS and OxygenOS), OnePlus has announced that OnePlus 3 owners will be getting the community build of Android 7.0 Nougat in the next few weeks, while the final build will be out before the end of the year. OnePlus 2 users will have to wait a bit, the phone is promised to be getting Nougat also but there is no specific timeframe for it.
