The Huawei P20’s AI features will come to the Mate 10 through Android 8.1 update

For owners of the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, Huawei is giving you access to the additional artificial intelligence-detected scenes introduced in the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro. The caveat is you’ll have to wait for the Android 8.1 Oreo update to hit your device. These AI-detected scenes help take the guesswork out of what settings are needed for a specific scene. Huawei introduced six on top of the 13 already available in the Mate 10s, including fireworks, document scan, waterfall, group photo, natural colors, and macro.

But if this isn’t a feature you want, the Mate 10s will also soon get the P20s’ ability to disable scene recognition. This option isn’t available to the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro at the moment. Huawei’s Richard Yu did give a specific timeline though when the update will come to these devices.

Nokia is bringing Android 8.1 Oreo to its low-end Nokia 2 device

This latest development will bring Android Oreo to the cheapest device to date. HMD’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas just announced that Android 8.1 is coming to the Nokia 2. We’re used to entry-level devices not getting the latest and greatest, but this is a welcome surprise. And since Android 8.1 brings with it memory management improvements of Android Go, that could bump up performance for the Nokia 2. The caveat is HMD hasn’t specified when the update would come. But it is something to look forward to.

Android OS 8.1 update slows down the Pixel 2 XL's fingerprint reader

The Pixel 2 XL is a divisive piece of tech. Many feel it is the best Android device out there and argue that it has the best camera on any smartphone, but there's also been apprehension because of the POLED display, burn in issues. Software has been another point of concern as it seems the Android 8.1 update, which unlocks all those cool AR Stickers, has been responsible for slowing down the fingerprint sensor.

Enthusiasts on Google’s support forums as well as Reddit are chiming in and saying that since the update, the fingerprint sensor has been slowing down or is less responsive. The issue is widespread enought that Google is acknowledging the bug and promises to look into it.

Google finally gets the cheeseburger right in Android 8.1

One of the weird, quirky tech stories that hit us recently was the idea that Google didn’t know how a cheeseburger looks like with the incorrect depiction of the food item as an emoji. The cheese it was seen placed at the bottom of the bun instead of the burger. It even caught the attention of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who promised to look into the “issue.” And true enough, he did.  Android 8.1 already has a “proper” cheeseburger emoji heading our way. But that wasn’t before the company made fun of itself and made an “Android Burger” IRL.
