OPPO debuts its under-screen camera

OPPO

The race to develop phones with nearly 100% screen-to-body ratio continues to heat up. We already know that the Chinese company OPPO has been developing an in-screen camera to make this happen. But at this week’s MWC Shanghai 2019, we finally get our first look at how the company is bringing its USC (under-screen camera) to life. OPPO claims it was able to achieve this by using a camera with a wider-than-average aperture and greater pixel size. To combat haze and quality issues, the company relies on algorithms. It also uses algorithms to boost HDR and white balance.

OPPO’s under-screen camera won’t be mass-produced this year

Chinese smartphone maker OPPO previously announced it’s working on under-screen camera technology. The company is even ready to show off its prototype at the upcoming MWC Shanghai 2019. But if you’re thinking it’ll show up in actual products coming out this year, then we’re going to disappoint you. OPPO’s VP Shen Yiren said the complexity involved with making the under-screen camera means it’ll be hard to mass produce this by the end of the year. And that there is a certain image quality loss associated with this new camera technology. So perhaps just like in-display fingerprint readers that needed time to improve, we’re going to have to be a bit more patient for under-screen cameras to show up. Another Chinese company Xiaomi has said it’s working on its own under-screen camera, but it hasn’t mentioned mass production yet. For now, we’re stuck with notches and pop-up cameras.

Oppo introduces 10x Lossless Zoom concept

Oppo may not have a presence here, but the Chinese company is working on something you will want to pay attention to. Ahead of Mobile World Congress 2019, it just showed its 10x Lossless Zoom concept at its Oppo Innovation Event in Barcelona. It debuted in a prototype device a three-camera system that has wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens, which gives you a total range of 16-160mm. It will also use a 6.76mm-thick camera module, which makes room for a larger sensor that can let more light in and boost image quality.

OnePlus 6T gets leaked, shows ‘waterdrop’ notch

If you’ve been following international tech news, the look of what’s being said to be the OnePlus 6T is going to be familiar. WinFuture showed off the leak of the full phone and it features what’s being called by OPPO as a waterdrop design for the notch. In case you didn’t know, OnePlus and OPPO share the same parent company and OnePlus as regularly taken design cues from OPPO but altered the branding, specs, and software to appeal to markets beyond what OPPO usually goes after (which includes China and India).

Not much is known about the specs of this upcoming device. Some of the things OnePlus has confirmed is there will be no headphone jack, but it could mean the device could have a bigger battery; and it will come with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Some of the other rumoured specs claim it could run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, Android Pie, and at least 6GB of RAM—which are all features you can expect from the latest flagship phones. It’s said to be priced around US$550 but there is no word yet when we might expect the device to launch.
