Samsung is rumoured to be shifting production from LCDs to QD-OLED displays

A new report coming from The Korea Herald claims that Samsung is shifting away from LCD production. The company is reportedly looking to merge the technology behind its Quantum Dot OLED panels with its OLED panels to offer a single display solution. The former is currently being used for its TVs, while the latter is for its mobile division. The report claims that Samsung has started limiting the production of its LCDs at its South Korean facilities. The main reason is lower profitability and demand. It also makes it possible for the company to move production towards new QD-OLED displays. According to Samsung Display CEO Lee Dong-hoon, the company is ready to launch its first QD-OLED panels. But he hasn't specified when or what device the display will debut on.

According to industry analysts, Samsung plans to invest upwards of 10 KRW trillion (approx. CA$11 billion) in QD-OLED production and that the first product will be a premium TV. QD-OLED displays are in essence a mix of traditional LCDs and OLED displays. These don't use LED backlights. Instead, they are individually-lit by blue LEDs that convert light to red and green. Blue LEDs are said to consume less power in the process and improve colour accuracy as well.
