RDIO to start cancelling subscriptions today

With the recent acquisition of RDIO by Pandora, the streaming music service is starting to wind down until it shutters its doors completely. Starting November 23rd, RDIO will stop accepting new subscriptions and they will also start cancelling new accounts. The older users will get to use their accounts for how long they’ve paid for. While this is happening the ad-supported free version will remain available for everyone until the service goes offline.

Pandora acquires RDIO music streaming service for US $75M

RDIO, one of the pioneering streaming music services has been purchased by Pandora for US $75 million. Pandora, it appears, plans to cannibalize RDIO and use it for parts to improve its service. Pandora said in an announcement that the acquisition includes “technology and intellectual property from Rdio.”

Pandora, which isn't available in Canada, has been facing stiff competition from streaming music leader Spotify and new entrant Apple Music  which are gaining popularity and being Internationally available. The streaming music industry has surpassed CD sales and even online music sales for the first time this year.

Rdio debuts more curated stations, launches these in more countries

Rdio’s hoping to keep up with its bigger competitions (i.e. Spotify and Apple Music) with its new batch of curated music stations. These new stations, as well as the old ones, are available to all Rdio users (whether they use free, select, or unlimited). Some of the new “influencer” stations include A.V. Club, Alt Sounds, Refinery29, and, strangely enough, Yelp. Meanwhile, new labels creating their own stations include XL, Blue Note, and Glassnote Records.

Aside from being offered here in Canada, in the US, and the UK, Rdio is bringing these curated stations to Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Prince pulls music from streaming sites Spotify and Rdio

Prince has had this love-hate relationship with the Internet and its services. He seems to empathize and agree with Taylor Swift’s criticism of freemium streaming services. So, what does he do? He pulls his music catalogue from the likes of Spotify and Rdio. If you want to hear his music online, right now you can see it on Tidal, SoundCloud, Deezer, and Google Play. There’s no word yet if Google plans to pull out his catalogue. We’re not sure if he’s coming to Apple Music. But for now, you’ll have a limited number of services to gain access to his funk-heavy tunes.
