Sony has officially unveiled the pricing and availability of its next-generation console. Pre-orders for the console began today with some retailers.

As for its competition, the Xbox Series X and Series S will be arriving a couple of days earlier, and with slightly lower prices. If you're more interested in the new Xbox consoles, those will be up for pre-order starting September 22. So, which console are you looking forward to getting?

Sony to hold PlayStation 5 Showcase on Sept. 16

Sony's gearing up for a 40-minute PlayStation 5 Showcase event on Wednesday, September 16. The "digital showcase" will feature updates from first-party Sony game studios and third-party partners to give us "one more look at some of the great games coming to PS5 at launch (and beyond!)." The Verge speculates that Sony might also reveal the release date and price for the PS5, given that Microsoft has already announced the pricing of the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X after the Series S got leaked.

The PS5 pre-registration for preorders went up last month, but Sony hasn't revealed the date for official preorders or pricing and release date. If you want to check out Sony's next-gen console, you can tune in to the event happening at 4 pm ET / 1 pm PT on Sony's Twitch or YouTube.

Sony's Aug. 6 'State of Play' event won't have 'big' PS5 announcements

Sony has another "State of Play" event coming up on August 6. But the company is eager to downplay what's going to be shown at the event. Happening this Thursday at 4 p.m. ET, the event will have "no big PS5 announcements." But it will still be a 40-minute stream featuring upcoming PlayStation 4 and PS VR games from third-party studios as well as "a few quick check-ins on third-party and indie games from June's PS5 showcase." So, if you plan on tuning in, don't get your hopes up too much. It still might be a substantial one, given the length of the event.

Sony rumoured to increase PS5 production to meet COVID-19 demand

If the reports are accurate, it looks like Sony wants to capitalize on people looking for entertainment while staying at home. The company will reportedly double the production of its next-generation PlayStation 5 console. Instead of just producing five or six million consoles, the manufacturer will reportedly make up to nine to 10 million units. With the PS5 slated to come out during "holiday 2020," this might be a big ask.

And if they do meet the quota, the next issue would be shipping the additional devices. Most of these gadgets are manufactured in China and shipped via ocean freighters. And combined with the demand, it's tough to get things out on time. Sony is supposedly considering air cargo, even though many carriers are also operating at reduced capacity because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
