'Red Dead Redemption' comes to PS4 and Switch, but is it worth it?

Image: Rockstar Games

Rockstar has just announced that Red Dead Redemption, the critically acclaimed Western game from 2010, is coming to Sony PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17. This might sound like good news for fans who have been waiting for a chance to play this classic on modern consoles, but some major drawbacks make these ports disappointing and overpriced.

First of all, these are not remakes or remasters, but simple ports with minimal changes. The graphics, framerate, and gameplay are the same as 13 years ago. The only new feature is the addition of some new languages. This means that PS4 and PS5 owners will not get to enjoy the game in 60fps or with enhanced visuals, and Switch owners will have to settle for a lower resolution and performance.

Microsoft halts Xbox One production

Source: Microsoft

Microsoft wants to focus its resources on the latest generation consoles instead of producing the older Xbox One models. The company has announced it will focus on making more of the still-scant Xbox Series X/S models. Microsoft already stopped producing the Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition in 2020. Now, the manufacturer won't make any other variant of the Xbox One series. Any of the Xbox One models you see in the market are existing stock.

Sony is taking a different approach to Microsoft, opting to continue producing PlayStation 4 units this year to fill the lack of the PS5 stock. The Xbox Series X/S and PS5 still quickly sell out when new stock is announced, so we can't say if these strategies will pay off.

Sony confirms it will offer free 'Horizon Forbidden West' PS4 upgrades to PS5 after all

Sony planned to make PlayStation 4 gamers purchase another copy of Horizon Forbidden West to upgrade to the PS5 version. But the company was met with heavy criticism for this move, given its original promise that a free upgrade will be available from PS4 to PS5. Sony backtracked and said that those who will buy Horizon Forbidden West on the Play Station 4 would get a PlayStation 4 upgrade for free.

The company is also committing to a US$10 digital upgrade option for the digital and physical versions of PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles.
